PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

Equipment Manufacturers realize that money spent to protect the life of their products repays them many times in customer satisfaction and reduced service cost. That is why Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings are installed in thousands of military and industrial systems ranging from aircraft landing gear to precision scientific instruments. On this page you can access information about the Hydro-Wype Scraper Ring, including a Product Overview, Specifications, Installation instructions, Life-span information and ordering details. You can also request a quotation and provide feedback.

Manufactured by Gad-Jets, Inc., Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings ensure the maximum removal of dirt, sand, dust, ice, snow, tree-sap and other abrasive materials from a piston rod as it moves in and out of a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder. Designed with a metal-to-metal fit and controlled breakout friction, Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings prevent foreign matter from cutting seals/packing, scoring rods and bearings and from the loss of hydraulic fluids and pressure. Installers have reported that Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings have saved them tens and even hundreds of thousands of dollars on one installation in less than a year's time. By keeping dirt out of your hydraulic, pneumatic and other mechanical equipment, Hydro-Wype Scraper rings improve the life of your equipment and the reliability of your business performance. Just a few of the many popular Hydro-Wype Scraper Ring applications include aircraft landing gear, shock absorbers, power steering cylinders, lifting equipment, foundry equipment, presses, machine tools, construction, agricultural and road-building machinery.

The unique combination of materials and design features in the Hydro-Wype scraper ring, ensure that the scraper ring is able to perform consistently throughout it's life, limiting the ingress of potential contaminants. The preferred brass material is sufficiently malleable so as to allow the scraper to conform entirely to the surface of the rod, while also providing an ideal combination of hardness and tensile strength which protect against the ingress of contaminants. The 5o angle of the ID both produces a sharp cutting edge as well as inducing rotation of the ring, so continually moving the slot (scarf) and further reducing the likelihood of the ingress of contaminants.

A-Series Scraper Rings

Gad-Jets’ Hydro-Wype A-Series scraper rings—manufactured in the company’s Dayton, Ohio plant—are the standard-bearer for military specification hydraulic scraper rings. Gadjets Scrapers have been protecting rods and packing in the landing gear of military aircraft and in other government applications for six decades. The mil-spec A-Series Scraper Rings are available in several form-factors.

  • One-piece Scraper Rings

Designed primarily for OEM's and maintenance/repairers engaging in a full tear-down refurbishment, one-piece Scraper rings provide the optimal ratio of tension against the rod vs. break-out friction. This is achieved by the use of a unique coiled design that pretensions the ring so that it will hold it's wiping capability over a very large number of cycles. A patented spring is incorporated (in A20-A71) to allow the tension to be maintained throughout the life of the scraper ring.

  • Two-piece Scraper Rings

Gadjets introduced the two-piece rings for the A-series range specifically for maintenance-repair applications including live-replacement so a full tear-down or removal of the rod-end, clevis or linkage can be avoided. The two-piece ring is especially effective when combined with the Hydro-Wype Adapter or some similar means of fixing the ring in place outboard of the cylinder cap and existing packing. Thus, in retrofit situations, the adapter can simply be released from the end-cap, the spring and two halves of ring removed and replaced with a new kit. The two-piece ring takes advantage of a patented spring design, to retain the two halves of the ring after they have been fitted to the rod.

    • (Standard) Rod Scrapers

Most usually, a Hydro-Wype scraper ring is intended to scrape the external surface (outside diameter) of a rod. Thus, the ring is constructed using a process that allows for the precision scraping edge to be cut into the inside diameter of the ring as the final step of manufacture, which is completed immediately prior to shipping.

    • Bore Scrapers

Scrapers that are constructed to provide a precision scraping edge on the outside diameter of the ring are also available in the Hydro-Wype product family, for use in applications where a bore or cylinder interior needs to be maintained free of contaminants.

New AB-Series Scraper Rings

Gadjets Inc. has recently introduced the new AB-Series of premium metal scrapers designed specifically for commercial applications. Manufactured in brass, with a stainless steel spring, the AB range includes both the original one-piece, and newer two-piece metal ring designs. The primary difference between the new AB range and previous versions of the Hydro-Wype scraper, is that the AB series are unplated. Cadmium, or other mil-spec plating is often unnecessary in many commercial environments as brass and other available copper alloys provide sufficient corrosion resistance, the AB-series can be provided as a more economical and readily available alternative.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings:

·          have a scraping edge free from nicks and burrs, and must have a surface finish of 50 micro inches R.M.S. or better and be treated to prevent corrosion.

·          are made of copper based alloys, and have no internal strains or cracks when subjected to the mercurous nitrate and nitric acid test. Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings are designed to absorb all the abuses and impacts that it may be subjected to in the initial shock of a landing gear or the reversing stroke of an accumulator cylinder piston rod.

·          are required to fit a ground piston rod 95% light tight at all times. Extensive tests prove that they exceed this requirement, and that less than 1/2 of 1% of the circumference of the piston rod is exposed to dirt, grit or ice. Due to the rotary action of the Hydro-Wype Scraper Ring, the exposed area is never in the same place.

·          because of their design and closely controlled dimensions, will remove all types of frozen accumulations whether it be oil, frost, mud or ice from the piston rod.

Controlled breakout friction of Hydro-Wype A Scraper Rings is possible due to the pre-stressed design which applies tension equally about the circumference of the Rings, and prevents excessive pressure tending to load the piston rod causing accelerated wear, friction and heat.

Scraper Rings are constantly checked in production to provide the maximum life. Samples are tested for breakout friction by abrasion and cycled 50,000 four inch strokes on a ground mandrel, DRY with no lubrication, and then stretched .010 of an inch oversize. After these grueling tests, Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings must still be 95% light tight to ensure that you get the protection you pay for. Our customers have reported that after 10,000,000 cycles, Hydro-Wype A's are still giving 99.5% protection to their products.

Hydro-Wype A-Series and AB-Series  Scraper Rings can be used over a wide range of temperatures from -65o to +500oF. Due to the pre-stressed tensioners, the Hydro-Wype Scraper Ring will compensate, not only for expansion and contraction due to temperature, but also for any wear that may result both in the Scraper Ring and/or on the piston rod.

The Hydro-Wype family of scraper rings use proprietary, flat, pre-stressed tensioners for ring sizes A1 through and including A15. A continuous stainless steel pre-stressed tensioner as indicated, is used on Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings, sizes A16 through and including sizes A71, and special sizes up to and beyond 36" inside diameter.

Tensioners are a particularly important aspect of the design of the Hydro-Wype. They ensure the correct ratio of circumferential pressure, to breakout friction. In this manner, the tension helps prevent the ingress of any potential contaminant, while also ensuring that breakout friction does not become excessive.

SPECIFICATIONS:

The Hydro-Wype™ scraper is a metal, spring-reinforced ring with a precision scraping edge used to clean and protect hydraulic rods and seals from contamination and damage. The uniquely coiled design and construction allows the ring to take advantage of the natural helix of any rod, to slightly rotate the ring during cycles. This continually presents a new part of the scraping surface to the rod, eliminating the potential for a wear-pattern. When installed on a hydraulic rod or shaft, the ring removes dirt, mud, ice and other foreign matter from the rod before such contaminants can reach the packing or bearings. The scraper ring has also proven to protect the rod or shaft from scoring and abrasion that cause damage to the seals/packing.

Customers of the Hydro-Wype scraper ring enjoy reduced unscheduled downtime, reduced preventative maintenance and reduced parts replacement and TDM costs.  The Hydro-Wype Scraper Ring is built to government specifications and is the standard by which other scraper rings in the industry are manufactured.  Constructed preferably of brass (other materials are available too), Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings may be coated with cadmium plating to meet these government standards.

Hydro-Wype A-series Scraper Rings are equal to and interchangeable with part numbers MS28776M2. Dimensions are in inches unless otherwise specified. Tolerances are in fractions +/- 1/64, decimals +/- .005, angles +/- 1/2 degree.

MATERIAL  SPECIFICATIONS:

Hydro-Wype Scraper Rings are made from brass, stainless steel and by special arrangement, a variety of other copper alloys. While Hydro-Wype scraper rings may be constructed using other materials for specific applications, each of these alternative materials have certain limitations that must be accounted for with respect to their intended uses. We have made an attempt to characterize those limitations based on our own experience in the following which is intended only as a guideline.

Preferred Metals

Brasses

Free-cutting brass - C36000 (62% copper, 35% zinc)

Malleable and good tensile strength yields ability to exert radial pressure on rod and good light-tight fit around entire circumference of rod. Holds cutting edge well. Highest machine-ability of all metals ensures best tolerances.

Cartridge brass - C26000 (70% copper, 30% zinc)

Highest ductility in the yellow brass series. Ideal for short-life applications. Very low iron content – good for applications requiring non-magnetic properties.

Aluminum brass - (not exceeding 3% aluminum).

Greater resistance in general to corrosion.

Naval brass containing tin (not exceeding 2%)

Less liable to corrode specifically in seawater.

Other Metals

Stainless Steel

Ideal for high-temperature applications.

Metals Available Only on Special Request.

Bronze

Very long-life but inelasticity tends to limit contact with rod, which has been observed to potentially allow ingress of contaminants.

Elastomers/Polymers

Nitrile

Must be highly reinforced

Fluorocarbon Polymers - TFE/PTFE polytetrafluoroethylene

Need to be careful of inclination to rollout

Thermoplastic/Urethane Polymers

Tends to compression set over time, loosing ability to exert radial pressure on the rod.

For most  applications, Free-Cutting Brass is considered a robust and economical choice. As the preferred brass material, free-cutting brass is sufficiently  malleable so as to allow the scraper to conform to the surface of the rod, while also providing an ideal combination of hardness and  tensile strength which protect against the ingress of contaminants. Free-cutting brass is the default material per the following specification:

INSTALLATION:

The Hydro-Wype Scraper Ring is easily incorporated into the design of an existing cylinder, end-cap or gland. Also, a standard Adapter is available from Gadjets Inc., to allow easy retro-fit of a ring to an existing design. Installation of the Hydro-Wype scraper ring is usually a simple two step process. Typical installation time on a production line averages less than 2 minutes. During field preventative or tear-down maintenance, this time may marginally increase.

Installation Incorporated into the Cylinder Design

Hydro-Wype scraper rings are used by a variety of Original Equipment Manufacturers and are integrated into the design of their cylinders. Installation in OEM applications is usually achieved by installing in the out-board position on the shaft – immediately in line of the abrasive and destructive materials from which the inner packing and seals will be guarded. It is recommended that the rod, seals and packing are already installed in the cylinder, so that the scraper ring can be correctly tensioned against the rod.

Once the ring is in place, the cylinder cap/gland is installed on the cylinder, so as to correctly retain the scraper ring. This may require a small amount of pressure to overcome the breakout friction, as the seal created against the shaft is specified to a fine tolerance. It is recommended that the cylinder/end cap/gland accommodate the ring with sufficient clearance so as to allow for the ring to rotate during the cycle of the rod, as this it helpful in protecting against the potential ingress of contaminants through the scarf of the ring.

LIFE-SPAN & WEAR INFORMATION:

Hydro-Wype Scraper rings have performed for decades in many key installations, cumulatively protecting rods and bores through many millions of cycles. At a minimum, a Hydro-Wype Scraper ring must maintain an ID +/- 2 thousands of an inch, maintain a 95% light-tight fit of the rod, and maintain a sharp cutting edge for 50,000 cycles. In product qualification tests for the US government, the Hydro-Wype scraper ring has completed 1 million cycles.
